Orthodox Church Directory
The term Orthodox is Greek and means correct in belief.
The Eastern Orthodox church is a Catholic body of national jurisdictions which include Greek Orthodox and Russian Orthodox. Eastern Orthodoxy is the second largest Christian communion in the world after the Roman Catholic church and the third largest grouping overall after Protestantism. There are over 240 million Eastern Orthodox Christians worldwide and nearly 4 million in America. The Eastern Orthodox is similar to the Roman Catholic church and is referred to as Eastern Rite Catholic. At one time Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism were joined, but due to the "Great Schism" of 1504 A.D. caused by cultural and linguistic barriers between Greek-speaking East and Latin-speaking West the two split.
Today there are over 2,000 parishes in the U.S. and growing.
